Bargain hunters in Newfoundland and Labrador are getting a reprieve.
Rossy, a Quebec-based chain of discount department stores that is also active in New Brunswick, is moving into most of the locations that had been occupied by Hart and Bargain Giant stores in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Montreal-based Hart Stores announced in October it was pulling the plug on 11 stores in the province, most of them in rural locations. Hart has often been the key retailer in some towns with — for instance — 33 years as an anchor tenant at the mall in Labrador City.
Rossy will open the first of its outlets at the end of March.
Rossy's president said the company has offered jobs to all former Hart employees, and that nearly all of them have agreed to stay on.
