Our Regions
ZONE 2 is comprised of Labrador City, Wabush and Churchill Falls. Each of these towns is unique in their own ways with a lot to offer the rest of the province and world.
Labrador City & Wabush
The province of Newfoundland and Labrador located in Northeastern Canada outlined by the Atlantic Ocean, contains the small but vibrant communities of Labrador City and Wabush commonly known as Labrador West located in the Southwestern portion of Labrador just 24km form the Quebec border.
Labrador City, nestled between a valley of Wapuskatto Mountains and Little Wabush Lake is accessible by air, rail and road. Labrador City/Wabush is 640 air miles from Montreal, PQ or 745 air miles from St John's NL and Wabush, the smaller of the two towns, is located 6km from Labrador City.
Situated on rich iron ore deposits of the Labrador Trough, the regional economy is primarily derived from mineral extraction, processing, and provision of services to the mining sector.
Churchill Falls
The town of Churchill Falls is located approximately 245 kilometers east of Labrador City, population 650, possibly the last known company town in Atlantic Canada. The residents provide the workforce to operate one of the world's largest underground hydroelectric plants.
The Churchill Falls Hydro Electrical development is the largest in Canada and the ninth largest in the world. The Churchill River was rechanneled and diverted through the power complex which was constructed underground. The heart of the project is the 5,428,500 KW underground power station, the second largest in the world.
A great many people shared a vision that Churchill Falls would not only provide a world class source of hydro-electricity but the opportunity to bring other economic development activity to Newfoundland and Labrador
